Every workplace is usually filled with risks and hazardous situations, and typically, the employer is responsible for any injury sustained in the course of discharging one’s duties diligently. In controlling workplace hazards, two major forms have been classified as the most effective and the least effective. The former includes the elimination method, substitution, and isolation, while the latter refers to personal protective equipment. It is the least effective because it doesn’t remove the hazard but helps the user manage it. 

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is a tool that shields a worker from hazardous conditions. They include protective glasses, apron, face shield, earplugs, gloves, stockings, boots, overall skincare formulations etc. 

A worker who is disturbed by noise is covered with earplugs while dealing with electricity is usually clothed in an overall. Also, gloves are deemed protective of chemical situations. However, they do not eliminate the possibility of hazard incidents.

An employer must provide protective equipment and ensure; they are used for the purpose if which they have it. He must give each employee protective wear and get it cleaned up after use. The supervisor on behalf of the employer guides such tools and supervises the equipment’s overall functioning.

However, more and more support has been given to the use of respirators than mere protective controls. Although many view them as alternatives or substitutions, they should be seen as emergency or short term aids. How to Use Such Equipment

Each equipment comes with directions for use. It is safe to familiarise yourself with how they operate before usage. Usually, the supervisor ensures this training is undergone and that no one without the technical knowledge operates.

The Pros and Cons of Using Such Equipment

In addition to directions for usage, all gadgets have their advantages and limitations. Knowing these will inform your safety while at work with it. Any equipment that has its cons heavier than its pros is highly disadvantageous, and its possession should be discouraged.

It Must Be Fit for Purpose

Generally, a piece of equipment is gotten to achieve a particular result. Therefore, all equipment must be fit for the purpose for which they are bought. They must also be safe to use and easily secured.

Maintenance is highly important. The supervisor plays a role in ensuring proper usage and maintenance of all equipment and that they are in safe conditions always.
