COVID-19
Our Activities and COVID-19
As a unit dedicated to promoting healthy living through food safety, we cannot ignore the recent world emergency- COVID-19. COVID-19 is a short acronym for coronavirus disease discovered in Wuhan, China in 2019. The disease is a deadly virus that is contracted through simple contact.
For instance, one can contract the virus through handshake or body contact with an infected person or fluid transmission when the infected person sneezes or coughs. Also, there has been no proof from cases recorded that the virus can be transmitted from food. Despite that, you must take caution in handling our foods and food packaging. We encourage everyone to follow the following guidelines:
- Cook your foods at recommended room temperature
- Only use disinfectants for hard surfaces and not your food.
- Where meat is bought in large quantity, refrigerate at 41’F or colder.
Further, in addition to vitamins gotten from fruits and vegetables, the Zinc in lean meat has proven helpful in boosting the human immune system.
The pandemic took a toll on quite some businesses not excluding the meat processing industry. To stop the spread of the virus, we have planned out our recovery measures. In turn, we implore you to:
- Wash your hands for 20 seconds from time to time or use an alcohol-based sanitiser.
- Stay 6 feet away from the person next to you or if you must move closer, use a face shield or nose mask.
- If you feel ill, stay at home.
- Maintain good hygiene through sanitation and food safety
Although you may not contract the virus through the food, it is very difficult to maintain a social distancing in a meat processing industry or some other workplaces; therefore, the following rules are prevailing guidelines:
Act of Social Distancing
All workers and visitors must maintain a distance of 6ft from one another. There should be no body contact, such as handshakes or hugs. This is to ensure that we can eliminate the risk of spread of the virus. Also, in cases where you find out that someone is ill, ensure you take active steps immediately. Precisely, shield yourself from any ill person or someone showing symptoms of Covid-19.
Washing of Hands Culture
All workplaces must provide a handwashing station for frequent hand washing. Washing of hands must take place for at least 20 seconds. Otherwise, one may use alcohol-based sanitisers. This is to prevent the presence of the virus.
Use of Face Shields or Nose Masks
In case of close contact, a face shield or nose mask shields one away from being infected.
You should also keep your distance from infected persons or persons showing signs such as high temperature, sneezing, sore throat, loss of taste, cough, difficulty in breathing, and dizziness, among others. This way, you can avoid getting infected.
